Rusted Muzzled
Everything started when I saw that collection of pictures. Dozens of Ukrainian tanks of all types piled up in a junkyard. This is really the dream subject for any modeller interested in Russian, rusted and abandoned vehicles.
For me, the 72nd scale is a mixture of fun and precision. It’s fun because usually the works are small and are only short time consuming, but also you can be so precise and detail every part of the vehicle. In this case I had no doubt to build a diorama in this scale, first because it is my favourite scale and secondly because I don’t have enough space to build it in 1/35.
As always the first thing to do is to collect the information. Fortunately the internet is full of pictures of abandoned material from Russia. It was especially nice to see an entire collection of pictures of this junkyard, not only one single pic. So I had the opportunity to study every detail and analyse fully all facets of this abandonment. Observing the pictures I noted that every horizontal surface was rusted, especially in the fenders, as it was made from a thinner steel. Also the rubber components are different in their weathering, since there is almost not a sign of paint on it.
For me, the most interesting part of this idea/diorama is to work with five different vehicles depicting five different grades of erosion. There are many variations of colour shading, different rust tones, different textures, moss and vegetation. This is without doubt the ultimate “dream diorama” for all “abandoned armour” modellers.
